The Small Malaita Constituency Office
has conducted a one week awareness tour to the constituency recently.
In a statement, the SMC Office
said the tour was part of the 2017 planned activities to make public awareness
about the policies and long term development plan of the constituency.
The awareness team comprising
three officers from the office was led by the Constituency Development Officer
(CDO). The program ran from 21 to 29 August which covered villages in the Asimeuri
and Asimae Ward.
The main message of the awareness
was based on the Principle of Partnership and Shared Responsibility. “We must
also contribute to the development of our constituency that means both the
beneficiary and the Constituency should contribute towards the cost of the
project, whether it is an income generating project, a housing project, or even
a major infrastructure project such as road”, the CDO said. The CDO emphasized
that there are other avenues available to earn an income and people should not
rely on the MP.
In terms of the 2017 priority
activities, the CDO in his presentations stressed that SMCO has directed its
focus on development infrastructure project such as road network and therefore has
reduced funding for personal income generating projects. “We must sacrifice the
micro income generating projects for the benefit of the development infrastructure projects such as the road
network that will provide the enabling environment for increased economic opportunities
in the constituency”, he said.
The awareness tour was very
successful. Many people appreciated the explanations which clarified a lot of
doubts, questions, frustrations and misunderstanding about the constituency
development fund. The statement added that many speakers commended the current
MP, Hon Rick Hou, for his vision and commitment to the development of Small
Malaita Constituency, most especially for the long term infrastructure development
program which he has been pursuing since his term in office.
